The Blackberry Silver Dollar fish (Myleus schomburgkii or Myloplus schomburgkii variant) is a rare, selectively bred color morph of the classic Black Bar Silver Dollar. Highly sought after by aquarists, this striking variety is famous for a large, dark bluish-black mottled blotch covering most of its circular, coin-shaped body, nicely accented by deep red or orange fins.

Care and Overview

Size: They grow to an adult size of 6 to 7 inches, though some variants can reach up to 9 inches.

Behavior: They are active, peaceful, shoaling fish that must be kept in groups of 4 to 6 or more to prevent skittishness.

Lifespan: With proper care, they can live for 8 to 10+ years.

Tank Setup: Minimum tank size should be 200 liters (approx. 55 gallons) for juveniles, but a 75+ gallon tank is highly recommended for a full adult school due to their active nature.

Diet and Plant Warning.

These fish are primarily herbivorous. They possess specialized teeth used to shred vegetation. They will eat almost all live aquarium plants.

Safe Plants: If you want greenery, stick to extremely tough species like Java Fern or Anubias.

Feeding: Provide a diet rich in Spirulina-based flakes, algae wafers, and fresh greens. You can offer frozen brine shrimp or bloodworms as an occasional treat. Avoid foods with excessive protein.

Tank Mates

Because they are large yet peaceful, they make excellent "dither fish" to calm down shyer species. They do wonderfully with:

Large, peaceful cichlids (like Severums or Geophagus)

Similarly sized peaceful community fish

Large catfish species (like Plecos or Corydoras)
