GloFish tetras are genetically modified freshwater fish derived from the Black Skirt Tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi). They inherit a specialized fluorescent gene from marine organisms like jellyfish or coral, allowing them to glow vibrantly under specific blue LED aquarium lights. They are not dyed or injected, meaning they pass their brilliant colors directly to their offspring.

Color Varieties

GloFish tetras are sold under trademarked color names. The official color palette includes:

  • Starfire Red®
  • Electric Green®
  • Sunburst Orange®
  • Cosmic Blue®
  • Galactic Purple®
  • Moonrise Pink®
  • Tank and Care Requirements
  • While they look futuristic, their core care requirements match traditional, hardy tetras.
  • Tank Size: Minimum 15 to 20 gallons. They are a schooling species and need ample open swimming space.
  • School Size: Keep them in groups of 6 or more. Keeping fewer can cause them to become stressed, aggressive, or nip the fins of tankmates.
  • Water Parameters: Temperature of 22°C to 27°C (72°F to 80°F) and a stable pH between 6.0 and 7.5.
  • Lighting: Use an aquarium hood with actinic blue LED lights to make their fluorescent colors pop. Regular daylight bulbs will make them look like normal, bright pastel fish.
  • Diet and Behavior
  • Diet: Omnivorous. They thrive on standard tropical fish flakes, pellets, and occasional treats of frozen or freeze-dried brine shrimp and bloodworms.
  • Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive to peaceful. They can be fin-nippers if they are bored or kept in too small of a group.
  • Compatible Tankmates: Other GloFish varieties (danios, barbs), neon tetras, corydoras catfish, mollies, and platies. Avoid mixing them with slow-moving, long-finned fish like Bettas or Angelfish.
