The Green Scat (Scatophagus argus) is a highly popular, hardy fish species famously known for its rounded body, greenish-bronze color, and bold black spots. Native to the coastal Indo-Pacific region, they are unique because they transition from freshwater as juveniles to brackish and marine environments as adults.

Essential Aquarium Care

Salinity Transition: Keep juveniles in freshwater or mild brackish water, but slowly transition adults to full brackish or marine tanks.

Tank Size: Provide a minimum of 50 gallons for small juveniles, but you will need a 125-gallon tank or larger for adults as they can grow up to 30 cm (12 inches).

Tank Decor: Use sturdy rocks, driftwood, or plastic plants. Live plants are usually eaten or destroyed by the salinity.

Diet: Feed an omnivorous diet heavy on greens like spinach, zucchini, and seaweed, alongside high-quality pellets or flakes.

Safety Warning: Handle with care! Their dorsal fin spines carry a mild venom that can cause painful stings.

Water Parameters: Maintain temperatures between 22°C to 28°C (72°F–82°F) and a high pH level between 7.5 and 8.5.
