The Green Spotted Puffer (Dichotomyctere nigroviridis) is a highly intelligent, interactive, and visually striking fish known for its vibrant green back, dark spots, and expressive eyes. Often sold incorrectly as a pure freshwater pet, this advanced-level species strictly requires a transition to brackish or full marine water as it matures to live a healthy, full lifespan.

Water & Tank Specifications

Salinity Transition: Juveniles tolerate freshwater, but adults must live in brackish water (Specific Gravity 1.005–1.015) or full marine conditions. Always mix water using specialized marine salt, never standard aquarium salt.

Tank Volume: A minimum of 30 to 40 gallons is mandatory for a single adult fish.

Filtration: They are messy eaters without gill covers or scales, making them highly sensitive to ammonia and nitrites. You must use a powerful, oversized filtration system.

Water Parameters: Keep temperatures warm at 75–82°F (24–28°C) with a stable, alkaline pH of 7.5–8.5. Crushed coral substrate helps stabilize these levels.

Diet & Beak Care

Continuous Teeth Growth: Their teeth fuse into a hard beak that constantly grows. If they do not wear them down, they will starve.

Crunchy Foods: Feed them a strict carnivorous diet of hard-shelled live or frozen foods. Give them small pond snails, ramshorn snails, ghost shrimp, crab legs, and krill.

Avoid Processed Food: They generally refuse flakes or pellets.

Temperament & Tank Mates

High Aggression: While cute and peaceful as juveniles, adults become highly aggressive fin-nippers.

Solitary Housing: They are best kept alone in a species-only tank. They will eventually attack or eat tank mates if space becomes tight or a fish shows weakness.

Behavior & Intelligence

Human Interaction: They possess incredible situational awareness, can recognize their owners, and will actively beg for food at the glass.

Sleeping Habits: When the lights turn off or after a heavy meal, they like to rest directly on the tank floor. Do not panic; they are simply sleeping or digesting.
