Half Moon Betta - Black Orchid

The Halfmoon Black Orchid Betta is a highly popular and striking variety of Betta splendens known for its deep, velvety black body and contrasting steel-blue or teal iridescent patterns. The name "Halfmoon" refers to its spectacular tail fin, which spreads out at a perfect 180-degree angle resembling a semi-circle when flared.

Visual Characteristics

Coloration: The body is generally ink-black or dark melano. Striking blue or turquoise highlights radiate through the fins like stained glass.

Fin Anatomy: Large, heavy fins that create a clean D-shape when the fish flares.

Display Requirement: They require angled, direct lighting to truly show off their iridescent secondary colors. They stand out best against light-colored aquarium sand or gravel.

Habitat & Water Care

Tank Size: Minimum of 5 gallons (19 liters), though 10 gallons is preferred.

Filtration: Use a gentle sponge filter or a filter with an adjustable flow. Strong currents will tear their large, delicate halfmoon fins and exhaust the fish.

Temperature: Tropical freshwater species requiring a heater to maintain a steady 75°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C).
