The Halfmoon Dragon Fancy Betta is one of the most visually stunning varieties of Betta splendens available in the aquarium hobby. This distinct line combines the dramatic, 180-degree fan tail of the Halfmoon trait with the heavy, opaque metallic body scales known as Dragon Scale. "Fancy" indicates that the fish exhibits a complex, multi-colored, or asymmetrical color pattern rather than a single solid color.

Specialized Care Requirements

Because of their highly modified fins and unique scale genetics, Halfmoon Dragons require targeted husbandry to thrive:

Tank Size & Setup: Provide at least a 5-gallon filtered tank. Avoid any sharp plastic plants or rough decorations, as the massive, delicate fins of a Halfmoon can tear easily, leading to fin rot. Stick to live plants or silk varieties.

Baffled Water Flow: Large Halfmoon fins create substantial water resistance, making it exhausting for the fish to swim in stiff currents. Use a pre-filter sponge or an adjustable filter to keep the water current gentle.

Dragon Scale Blindness (Diamond Eye): The heavy guanine layer that creates the "dragon scale" look can sometimes grow over the fish's eyes as it matures, causing partial or full blindness. Keep a consistent feeding routine in the exact same corner of the tank so your fish can locate food easily by scent if their vision degrades.

Optimal Water Parameters: Maintain a stable tropical temperature between 24°C and 28°C (76°F–82°F) using a reliable aquarium heater. Keep the pH neutral to slightly acidic, ideally between 6.0 and 7.5.
