Java Fern attached to driftwood is one of the most classic, low-maintenance hardscape combinations in the aquarium hobby. Because Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) is an epiphyte, it draws its nutrients directly from the water column rather than from soil. Never bury its horizontal rhizome in gravel or sand, or the plant will suffocate and rot.
