African cichlids are highly colorful, active freshwater fish native primarily to the Great Rift Valley lakes of East Africa. They are incredibly popular in the aquarium hobby because their vibrant blues, yellows, and reds mimic the striking look of saltwater marine environments. They are active, intelligent, and fiercely territorial fish.

Requirement.    Ideal Parameters & Specifications

Tank Size.          Minimum 55 to 75 gallons for a                                    proper community.

Water pH.          Hard, alkaline water between 7.8                                  and 8.6.

Temperature.   Tropical warmth between 25°C and                             26°C (77°F–79°F).

Aquarium Decor  Heavy rockwork stacked firmly to                                 create plenty of hidden caves.

Lifespan.          Can live up to 10 years with optimal                             filtration and care.

Managing Aggression

African cichlids are naturally aggressive and establish strict hierarchies. Hobbyists control this behavior through "controlled overcrowding". Packing the tank with extra fish spreads the dominant male's aggression across a large group rather than targeting a single fish. Because of this high fish load, heavy-duty water filtration and frequent water changes are mandatory.
