The Red Maru Snakehead (scientifically known as Channa marulioides) is a highly prized, predatory freshwater fish. Also known as the Emperor Snakehead or Toman Bunga, this species is native to the deep river systems of Southeast Asia, particularly Borneo and Sumatra. It is famous among monster fish keepers for its fiery crimson coloration and aggressive, bold personality.

Physical Characteristics

Size: It grows very large, typically reaching 60 to 70 centimeters in captivity.

Coloration: Juveniles start with subtle, dull tones. Vivid red and orange scales develop gradually as the fish matures.

Markings: Adults feature a prominent dark spot (ocellus) outlined in a light border at the base of the tail. They also display dark, white-bordered scales forming "flower" patterns along their sides. Their eyes are a striking red or orange color.

Tank Care and Requirements

Tank Size: Due to their massive size, they require a minimum tank capacity of 88 gallons (400 liters). Large adult specimens need even bigger setups.

Water Parameters: They thrive in tropical temperatures between 24°C and 28°C. The pH should be kept neutral to slightly acidic, between 6.0 and 7.5.

Filtration: Excellent filtration is vital. They have messy feeding habits that can quickly spoil water quality. A high-rated canister filter is essential.

Security: A tightly secured lid is mandatory. Snakeheads are powerful jumpers and will escape if given the chance.
