Tiger Barb (2-3 cm)

The tiger barb (Puntigrus tetrazona) is a highly popular, energetic, and colorful freshwater tropical fish native to Southeast Asia. Known for their striking vertical stripes and playful but mischievous personalities, these fish are a staple in the aquarium hobby. However, because they are notorious fin-nippers, they require specific tank setups and carefully chosen tankmates to prevent aggression.

Key Characteristics

Appearance: Classic varieties have a silver-gold body accented by four distinct black vertical bands and vibrant orange-red tipped fins.

Size: They typically grow to about 2.5 to 3 inches (7–10 cm) in captivity.

Lifespan: With proper care, they generally live for 5 to 7 years.

Behavior: Highly active, fast-swimming, semi-aggressive schooling fish.

Aquarium Care & Water Parameters

Tiger barbs are exceptionally hardy, making them great for both beginners and experienced aquarists.

Tank Size: A minimum of 30 to 40 gallons is recommended to give this active species plenty of swimming room.

Temperature: Keep the water warm, ideally between 21°C and 29°C (70°F–84°F).

pH Range: They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water ranging from 5.0 to 7.5 pH.

Environment: Use dense live plants along the perimeter and driftwood to create natural hiding spaces, while keeping the center open for fast swimming.

Managing Aggression (The Schooling Rule)

The most critical aspect of keeping tiger barbs is their school size. You must keep them in a group of at least 6 to 8 (ideally 10 or more).

When kept in large numbers, they establish a natural pecking order and focus their playful chasing and nipping entirely on each other.If kept isolated or in pairs, they become highly stressed and will relentlessly bully and nip at other tank residents.

Diet and Feeding

Tiger barbs are omnivorous and opportunistic eaters. They thrive on a diverse diet consisting of high-quality tropical flake food, micro-pellets, and occasional treats of live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to enhance their natural coloration.
