Ammannia gracilis (commonly spelled Ammania Gracilis) is a striking, large-stemmed aquatic plant native to West Africa, highly prized in the aquarium hobby for its vibrant copper-red, pink, and orange coloration. It features thick, burly stalks and long, wavy leaves that provide excellent contrast against green foliage and dark hardscapes in midground to background layouts.

Requirements & Water Parameters

While relatively hardy, this plant requires specific conditions to achieve its signature fiery blush. In suboptimal setups, it will fade to a pale green or bronze tone and drop its lower leaves.

Lighting: High intensity is mandatory to bring out deep pinks and reds.

CO2 Injection: Highly recommended at 25–30 ppm to support its fast growth rate.

Temperature: Performs best between 72–77°F (22–26°C), though it can tolerate slightly cooler water. Avoid sudden swings.

pH Range: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water (6.5–7.5 pH).

Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–10 GH).

Pruning & Propagation

Propagation is done using the standard trim-and-replant method:

Let the main stalk grow tall into the background.Cut off the top robust half of the stem using sharp aquascaping scissors.

Push the cutting back into the substrate to establish a new plant.

The remaining bottom root portion will send out bushy side shoots, creating a denser layout.
