Substrates, Sands & Stones
Aquarium
Choosing the right aquarium sands and stones depends entirely on whether your tank prioritizes live plants or specific fish types. Substrates act as a foundation for plant roots and beneficial bacteria, while hardscape stones create hiding spots and realistic underwater terrain.
Step-by-Step Setup Guide
Rinse Thoroughly: Always wash sands and stones in clean tap water to remove dust before putting them in the tank.
Layer Substrates: If keeping live plants, put a nutrient base down first (like volcanic mineral), then cap it with your sand.Place Stones Carefully: Never let large stones press directly against bare glass. Place a layer of sand or structural foam beneath them.
Fill Slowly: Place a small bowl on top of your sand bed and pour water into the bowl to prevent your aquascape from shifting.
Reptiles
Reptile sand is a popular tank floor covering used to recreate natural desert settings for desert-dwelling exotic pets. It works well for animals that love to dig, burrow, or lay eggs, and it conducts heat effectively when used with heating mats.
However, loose sand carries a risk of "impaction" (fatal gut blockages) if your pet accidentally swallows it during feeding. Because of this, it is highly critical to choose the correct type of substrate based on your specific reptile species and age.
Types of Reptile Sand
Natural Quartz Desert Sand: Sifted, real desert sand with no dyes. It is best for adult reptiles that naturally burrow, such as sand boas or adult bearded dragons.
Calcium Carbonate Sand (Calci-Sand): Made from digestible calcium limestone. While designed to dissolve if swallowed, it can still clump and cause impaction if eaten in large amounts.
Clay-Based Builder Sand: Mixed with clay so you can wet it, shape it, and let it dry. This allows reptiles to build sturdy, realistic caves and tunnels that will not collapse.
Sand Mats: A non-loose alternative made of textured sand glued to a safe backing. This gives the visual look of desert sand with zero risk of ingestion or gut blockages.
