Begonia 'Manaus' exceptional choice for terrariums, vivariums, and hanging baskets - Juvenile plant, Soil and pot included
Begonia 'Manaus' is a striking, fast-growing hybrid tropical plant known for its velvety, dark green-and-red foliage covered completely in tiny, vibrant red hairs (trichomes). Created by crossing two Brazilian species—Begonia soli-mutata and Begonia thelmae—it inherits a trailing or creeping (scandent) growth habit, making it an exceptional choice for terrariums, vivariums, and hanging baskets.
Key Characteristics
Foliage: The leaves are round to ovate, reaching 2 to 4 inches in diameter. They feature excellent, deep venation and display a reddish-bronze hue on their undersides.
Growth Habit: It typically grows 4 to 8 inches tall but can sprawl or trail a foot or more over the edges of a pot.
Flowers: It blooms frequently throughout the year, producing clusters of small, delicate white flowers that contrast beautifully with the dark leaves.
Toxicity: Like most begonias, it is toxic to pets if ingested.
Care and Growing Conditions
Begonia 'Manaus' has a moderate care level and thrives best when its native tropical environment is replicated.
Light Requirements
Bright, indirect light is ideal.
Place it near a window with a sheer curtain.
Avoid direct sunlight, which will quickly scorch and bleach the velvety leaves.
Stems will stretch and colors will dull if it receives insufficient light.
Watering and Soil
Keep the growing medium consistently moist but never soggy.
Allow the top 1 to 2 inches of soil to dry out slightly between waterings.
Use a chunky, well-draining tropical potting mix or a sphagnum moss and perlite blend.
Avoid letting the plant dry out completely, as it may collapse and suffer irreversible leaf damage.
Temperature and Humidity
Humidity: High humidity is critical. It thrives at 70% to 85% humidity. While it can adapt to average household humidity, it does exponentially better in a terrarium, a greenhouse, or near a humidifier.
Temperature: Keep it in a warm environment between 20°C and 28°C (50°F to 95°F). Protect it from sudden cold drafts and HVAC vents. Prolonged exposure to temperatures above 32°C (90°F) can cause the plant to struggle or "melt".
Maintenance and Propagation
Pruning: It responds exceptionally well to pruning. Regular trimming prevents it from overtaking smaller terrariums and encourages it to branch out and become bushier.
Propagation: It roots very rapidly from stem cuttings compared to other species, especially when placed in moist soil or damp sphagnum moss. Cuttings often develop aerial roots naturally, making propagation highly successful.
