Bolbitis is a highly popular genus of aquatic ferns widely used in aquascaping and the aquarium hobby. They are celebrated for their intricate, translucent green leaves and hardiness. These ferns are epiphytes, meaning they grow attached to hard surfaces like rocks and driftwood rather than being buried in soil.

Plant Care and Propagation Guide

Do Not Bury the Rhizome: This is the absolute golden rule. The thick green stem (rhizome) needs oxygen and water flow. Burying it in substrate will cause it to rot and kill the plant.

Mounting the Plant: Use fishing line, cotton thread, or a tiny drop of cyanoacrylate-based super glue to anchor the rhizome securely to a rock or driftwood. Over time, its small rootlets will grip the texture of the hardscape naturally.

Handling "Melt": When purchased new, this plant is often in its terrestrial (emersed) form. Once submerged, its old leaves may turn black or dissolve ("melt"). Do not panic; simply trim the dead fronds. New, fully aquatic leaves will soon sprout.

Easy Propagation: To propagate, simply use sharp aquascaping scissors to cleanly cut the horizontal rhizome. Ensure each piece you cut off has a few healthy leaves and rootlets attached so it can establish itself as a new plant.
