Budgerigar (Budgie)

The budgerigar, most commonly called a budgie or common parakeet, is a small, long-tailed, highly intelligent parrot native to the arid interior regions of Australia. Ranked as the most popular pet bird in the world, these social and vocal animals are famous for their playful personalities, low-maintenance size, and surprising ability to mimic human speech.

Color Series

Green Series (Yellow Base): Includes light green, dark green, olive, and gray-green. Green is the dominant wild color.

Blue Series (White Base): Includes sky blue, cobalt, mauve, and violet. Lacks yellow pigment.

Gray: Features a distinct silver-to-charcoal gray wash over the body.

Telling Males and Females Apart

Adult budgies are sexually dimorphic, meaning you can easily tell their biological sex by looking at their cere—the fleshy patch of skin right above their beak where their nostrils sit.

🤎 Adult Females: Possess a tan, light beige, or dark brown cere.

🩷 Chicks/Juveniles: Both sexes start out with a light pinkish-purple cere, which transitions as they hit maturity at about 6 months of age.

Basic Care Requirements

If you are considering getting a pet budgie, they require specialized care to live out their maximum lifespan:

Diet Beyond Seeds: A diet consisting only of seeds is high in fat and leads to early death. Provide a balanced mix of high-quality pellets, fresh leafy greens (like kale and spinach), broccoli, and occasional fruit slices.

Enrichment & Toys: Budgies have highly active minds. They need shredding toys made of balsa wood or paper, swings, and natural wood branches of varying thicknesses to keep their feet healthy and prevent boredom.

Flight Exercise: Their cages should be wide rather than tall to allow for horizontal flight. They should ideally get supervised time outside of their cage daily to stretch their wings.
