Crystal Black Shrimp (CBS), Caridina cf. cantonensis

Crystal Black Shrimp (CBS), scientifically known as Caridina cf. cantonensis, are highly prized freshwater aquarium shrimp known for their striking black and white striped patterns. They are a selectively bred mutation of the wild bee shrimp and require a bit more expertise than standard Cherry Shrimp.

Ideal Water Parameters

Crystal Black Shrimp are sensitive to water quality changes and require stable, soft, and acidic water conditions:

Temperature: 18°C to 24°C (64°F to 75°F)

pH Level: 6.0 to 6.8

gH (General Hardness): 4 to 6

kH (Carbonate Hardness): 0 to 1

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): 100 to 150

Tank Setup & Environment

Substrate: Use an active, buffering substrate (like Fluval Shrimp Stratum) to naturally lower and stabilize the pH.

Filtration: A sponge filter or Matten filter is ideal to keep baby shrimp from being sucked up.

Plants & Decor: Add plenty of live plants, driftwood, and Indian almond leaves to provide hiding spots and surface area for biofilm growth.

Acclimation: Always use the drip acclimation method slowly over several hours when introducing them to a new tank.

Diet & Compatibility

Diet: They continuously graze on naturally occurring algae and biofilm.

Supplement their diet with high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables.

Tank Mates: Keep them in a species-only tank or with very peaceful tank mates like Otocinclus catfish or snails.

Avoid aggressive or large fish that will eat them.
