The Galaxy Rasbora—scientifically known as Danio margaritatus and often called the Celestial Pearl Danio (CPD)—is a stunning, miniature freshwater fish native to the high-altitude wetlands of Myanmar and Northern Thailand. Renowned for its dark blue body covered in pearly, star-like spots and vibrant orange-red fins, it grows to a maximum size of just 1 inch (2.5 cm). This eye-catching pattern makes it one of the most popular choices for modern nano and planted aquariums.

Ideal Water Parameters

Despite their delicate appearance, these nano fish are relatively hardy. They naturally prefer slightly cooler, calm waters.

Temperature: 65°F to 76°F (18°C to 24°C) is ideal; higher temperatures can dull their colors.

pH Level: 6.5 to 7.5.

Water Hardness: Soft to medium (GH 3–13 dGH).

Tank Setup & Care

Creating a secure environment is essential because Galaxy Rasboras can be naturally timid and shy.

Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is highly recommended for a small school.

Aquascape: Use heavy vegetation, fine-leafed plants like Java Moss, and driftwood to provide plenty of hiding spots.

Substrate: A dark substrate will make their iridescent spots and deep blues visually stand out.

School Size: Always keep them in groups of 6 or more (ideally 10+) to reduce stress and promote schooling behavior.

Diet & Feeding

They are micro-predators and omnivores with very small mouths.

Main Diet: High-quality crushed flakes, micro-pellets, or slow-sinking granules.

Live/Frozen Treats: They thrive on baby brine shrimp, daphnia, micro-worms, and cyclops.

Feeding Tip: They rarely feed from the surface; ensure food slowly sinks down to the middle and bottom layers where they dwell.

Compatibility & Tank Mates

Because of their miniature size, they should only be housed with peaceful, non-aggressive species.

Great Tank Mates: Other nano fish (like Neon Tetras or Chili Rasboras), Dwarf Corydoras, Otocinclus, and peaceful snails.

Shrimp Safe: They are one of the safest fish to keep with Neocaridina dwarf shrimp, though they may occasionally snack on tiny, newborn shrimplets.

Avoid: Large, aggressive, or fast-moving fish that will outcompete them for food or view them as a snack.
