Golden Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus)

The Golden Gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus) is a hardy, medium-sized freshwater fish famous for its bright yellow-gold body. It is a popular captive-bred color variation of the Three-Spot Gourami.

Overview of Care

Maximum Adult Size: 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 cm).

Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons (75 liters) for juveniles, but 40 gallons (150 liters) is highly recommended for full-grown adults.

Water Temperature: 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C).

Water pH: 6.0 to 7.5.

Lifespan: 4 to 6 years with proper care.

Behavior & Tank Mates

Golden Gouramis are considered semi-aggressive. While they are generally peaceful when young, adult males can become highly territorial and quarrelsome as they grow.

Good Tank Mates: Sturdy, peaceful fish of similar size like Plecostomus, Cherry Barbs, and Corydoras catfish.

Avoid: Small fish or dwarf shrimp under 4 inches, as mature gouramis will hunt them. Also avoid long-finned fish or known fin-nippers like Tiger Barbs.

Gourami Groups: Keep either a single specimen or a harem of one male to two or more females to reduce aggression.

Tank Setup

Plants: Use dense live plants like Java Fern or Amazon Swords, along with floating vegetation.

Decor: Provide plenty of driftwood and rocks to create visual barriers and hiding spots.Water Flow: Keep the water current gentle, as they dislike strong filters.

Surface Access: They possess a labyrinth organ that allows them to gulp air from the surface. Always leave an air gap at the top of the tank.

Diet & Nutrition

They are opportunistic omnivores. You should feed them high-quality tropical flakes or pellets as a base. Supplement this with frozen or freeze-dried foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp. Be careful not to overfeed protein, as they are prone to bloating.
