Monte Carlo plant (Micranthemum tweediei)

Monte Carlo (Micranthemum tweediei) is one of the most popular carpeting plants in the freshwater aquascaping hobby. It is highly favored for its small, round, vibrant light-green leaves that crawl horizontally across the substrate to form a thick, lush mattress. Compared to other dwarf foreground plants like Dwarf Baby Tears (HC), Monte Carlo is much hardier, has a stronger root system, and is far more forgiving for beginners.

Step-by-Step Planting Guide

Preparation: If you bought a tissue culture gel cup, thoroughly wash away the nutrient agar gel under lukewarm tap water.

Portioning: Cut or pull the dense mat into small, bite-sized plugs or individual stems. Small portions spread faster than planting one large clump.

Planting: Use a pair of fine aquascaping tweezers to push each plug deep into the substrate. Angle the tweezers at 45 degrees, insert, and pull away gently. Leave only the very tips of the leaves visible above the soil.

Spacing: Space the plugs roughly 2–3 cm apart in a grid pattern. They will naturally creep across the gaps to seal the carpet.

Long-Term Maintenance

Trimming: Once the carpet exceeds 2–3 cm in thickness, trim it straight across with curved aquascaping scissors. Regular trimming prevents the bottom layer from losing light, rotting, and causing the entire mat to float up.

Debris Management: Lightly vacuum the top of the carpet during water changes to suck out trapped organic waste and fish poop, keeping the dense mat healthy.

Algae Control: Because it requires moderate-to-high light, monitor your fertilizer doses and photoperiod (keep light to 6–8 hours daily) to avoid hair algae smothering the leaves.
