The orange-spotted snakehead (Channa aurantimaculata)—also widely known as the Golden Cobra Snakehead—is a highly striking, predatory freshwater fish native to the Brahmaputra River basin in Northeast India. It is famous in the aquarium hobby for its vibrant golden-orange patterns, intense territorial behavior, and unique ability to breathe atmospheric air.

Adult Size: Grows up to 36–40 cm (approx. 14–16 inches).

Lifespan: Can live up to 10–15 years with proper care.

Appearance: Features an elongated dark brown or black body highlighted by 7 to 8 large, irregular vertical orange patches. The pectoral fins often display striking black bases and distinct vertical bands, sometimes accompanied by subtle blue highlights.

Aquarium Care & Water Parameters

Unlike many tropical fish, this specific snakehead comes from a region with distinct seasonal changes and prefers cooler water temperatures.

Water Temperature: 18°C to 24°C (64°F to 75°F) is ideal. They require a cooler winter "rest period" where the temperature is dropped closer to 15°C (59°F) to mimic their natural habitat and maintain long-term health.

pH Level: Prefers neutral to slightly acidic conditions between 6.0 and 7.5.

Tank Setup: Needs a large aquarium (at least 75–100 gallons for an adult) with plenty of hiding spots like driftwood, caves, and dense live plants.

Critical Requirement: A tight-fitting, heavy lid is mandatory. As air-breathers, they will swim to the surface for oxygen. They are incredible jumpers and will escape through any open gap. Leave a few inches of air space at the top of the tank so they can breathe.

Diet and Temperament

Diet: They are obligate carnivores and ambush predators. In captivity, feed them a protein-rich diet including earthworms, crickets, roaches, ghost shrimp, and high-quality carnivore pellets. Avoid feeding them mammalian meat (like chicken or beef) as they cannot digest it properly.

Temperament: Extremely aggressive and territorial. They are best kept solo in a single-species setup. Any smaller tank mates will quickly become food, and they will fight aggressively with other snakeheads unless they are a established, bonded breeding pair.
