Seachem Prime is a highly concentrated water conditioner widely considered an industry standard for both freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Its main purpose is to instantly make tap water safe for fish, coral, and plants.

Core Functions

Removes Chlorine and Chloramine: It completely neutralizes the harsh chemicals municipalities use to treat tap water.

Detoxifies Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate: It temporarily binds these harmful nitrogen compounds into a non-toxic form for up to 48 hours. This protects your fish while your tank’s biological filter processes the waste.

Neutralizes Heavy Metals: It detoxifies metals commonly found in tap water at standard concentrations.

Protects Fish: It stimulates the natural production and restoration of a fish's slime coat.

Safe for Reefs: It is non-acidic, will not alter your aquarium's pH, and will not cause protein skimmers to overactivate.

Standard Dosage Instructions

Because Prime is highly concentrated, a small bottle lasts a long time:

Standard Dose: Use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 200 liters (50 US gallons) of new water.

Small Volumes: Use 2 drops per gallon (approx. 3.8 liters). Each inner cap thread equals roughly 1 mL.

Application: You can add it directly to your bucket of replacement water before pouring it into the tank, or dose for the entire tank volume if adding tap water directly into the aquarium.

Emergency Dosing & Safety

High Nitrite/Ammonia Spikes: In an emergency or tank-cycling spike, you can safely use up to a 5x standard dose to protect your fish.

High-Temperature Warning: If your tank water temperature is above 30°C (86°F) and chlorine or ammonia levels are low, use a half dose to prevent reducing oxygen levels too drastically.

The Smell: Prime has a distinct, strong sulfur (rotten egg) smell. This is completely normal and is a byproduct of the active chemical reducing agents.
