The Silver Tinfoil Barb (Barbonymus schwanenfeldii) is a large, highly active freshwater fish known for its striking metallic, mirror-like silver scales and vibrant red or orange fins.

⚠️ The most critical thing to know before buying a Tinfoil Barb is their adult size, they grow incredibly fast and will reach 12 to 16 inches in length. Because they are a schooling fish, you must keep them in a group of 5 or more, meaning they will easily outgrow standard home aquariums.

Behavior & Tank Requirements

Schooling Nature: They thrive only when kept in groups. Single barbs become highly stressed or aggressive.

Swimming Space: They are constantly in motion and need a long tank with massive open swimming space.

Jumping Hazard: These fish are powerful, athletic swimmers and known jumpers. A heavy, tightly fitted aquarium lid is mandatory.

Live Plants: They are primarily herbivorous and will gladly eat or shred most live aquarium plants. Stick to artificial decor or tough plants like Anubias and Java Fern.

Ideal Tankmates

While they are peaceful and do not actively look for fights, they are opportunistic. If a fish fits in their mouth, they will eat it.
