Essential Pre-Treatment Guide

Natural driftwood will initially float and release dark organic compounds called tannins that stain your water yellow.

Follow these essential steps before placing the wood into your tank:

Scrub: Use a clean, stiff-bristled brush to remove loose bark, dirt, or debris.

Boil: Boil the wood in a large pot for 1 to 2 hours. This sterilizes the wood, kills harmful microbes, and forces out initial tannins.

Soak: Submerge the wood completely in a bucket of fresh water for 1 to 2 weeks.

Change the water every few days until it remains clear and the wood sinks on its own.
