The tiger eel usually refers to the Tiger Moray Eel (Gymnothorax polyuranodon), a rare and fascinating species famous for being one of the very few true freshwater-tolerant moray eels. They grow up to 3 to 4 feet long, feature a striking tiger-stripe pattern, and require a minimum tank size of 90 to 125 gallons.

Tank Requirements & Setup

Tank Size: 90–125 gallons or larger for an adult.

Water Parameters: Can start in fresh water, but adults often prefer a light brackish setup as they mature. Maintain stable parameters with heavy filtration.

Hiding Spots: Provide plenty of secure caves, rocks, and driftwood. They spend daylight hours hiding with only their heads peeking out.

Escape Proofing: They are notorious escape artists. A completely secure, heavy, tight-fitting lid with no gaps around the filter or cords is mandatory.
