Anubias lanceolata is a popular, exceptionally hardy freshwater aquarium plant praised for its long, slender, lance-shaped deep green leaves. Also scientifically categorized under variations like Anubias barteri var. glabra or grouped with Anubias heterophylla, this West African epiphyte is ideal for beginners and professionals alike because it thrives in low-tech setups without demanding intensive lighting or specialized CO₂ injection.

Essential Care & Water Parameters

Lighting: Low to moderate light; high light causes structural stress and rapid green algae buildup on the slow-growing leaves.

Temperature: Tropical climates between 22°C and 28°C are optimal, though it can tolerate a broader range of 20°C to 30°C.

Water Chemistry: Slightly acidic to neutral pH is preferred, but it easily adapts to varying water hardness.

Nutrients: Liquid fertilizers or root tabs boost health. Added CO₂ speeds up its slow growth.

Placement and Planting Technique

Do Not Bury Rhizome: The thick green horizontal stem (rhizome) must stay completely above the substrate. Burying it cuts off water circulation, causing the plant to rot, melt, and die.

Hardscape Attachment: Secure it to driftwood, rocks, or 3D backgrounds using aquarium-safe super glue gel, cotton thread, or fishing line. The roots will self-anchor firmly within a few weeks.

Aquascape Positioning: Because of its tall, upright, slender stature (reaching up to 30-60 cm in mature or XL variants), it works beautifully in the midground or background to provide strong vertical contrast.

Tank Compatibility and Propagation

Fauna Safe: It is 100% safe for sensitive shrimp, snails, and fish.

Herbivore Resistant: The thick, leathery leaves are exceptionally durable, making them resistant to plant-eating fish like cichlids or goldfish.

Propagation: Simply use sharp scissors to cut the horizontal rhizome into smaller pieces, ensuring each newly divided section retains at least 2–3 healthy leaves and roots.
