Black Ghost Knifefish (Apteronotus albifrons) 8-9cm

The Black Ghost Knifefish (Apteronotus albifrons) is a highly unique, nocturnal freshwater fish native to the Amazon River basin. They are famous for their jet-black bodies, continuous moving bottom fin, and the weak electrical field they generate to find food and navigate in the dark.

Unique Traits and Behavior

Electrical Navigation: They have an electric organ that creates a weak radar system. This helps them map their surroundings and "see" at night. It will not shock humans.

Nocturnal Nature: They are active at night and shy during the day.

High Intelligence: They can learn to trust you. Many owners train them to swim onto their hands or eat directly out of their fingers.

Movement: They lack a dorsal (top) fin. They use a long, ribbon-like fin under their belly to swim backward and forward with equal ease.

Aquarium Setup Requirements

Hiding Spots: You must provide caves, smooth rocks, driftwood, or PVC tubes. Use a clear acrylic "ghost tube" so they can view the fish while it feels safely hidden.

Substrate: Use fine sand or smooth, rounded gravel. They do not have scales and can easily scratch their skin on sharp rocks.

Lighting: They prefer very dim or subdued lighting.

Filtration: Strong, reliable filtration is a must. They are highly sensitive to poor water quality and sudden changes in water parameters.

Diet and Feeding

They are strict carnivores. They will rarely accept dry flake food or processed pellets. Feed them right before you turn the tank lights off for the night.

Frozen foods: Bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp.

Live foods: Earthworms (chopped) and blackworms.

Dry foods: High-protein, slow-sinking carnivore pellets (if they accept them).

Tank Mates and Compatibility

Keep only one Black Ghost Knifefish per tank. They are very aggressive toward their own kind because their electrical signals interfere with each other.

Good Tank Mates: Medium to large, peaceful fish like Angelfish, Severums, Geophagus cichlids, Silver Dollars, and large Rainbowfish.

Bad Tank Mates: Avoid very small nano fish (like Neon Tetras or Guppies) because the Knifefish will eat them as it grows. Avoid highly aggressive fish like Convict Cichlids that might bully them.
