Bucephalendra 1 Pot

Bucephalandra (commonly called "Buce") is a genus of rare, slow-growing aquatic epiphytes endemic to the island of Borneo. They are highly prized in the aquascaping hobby for their hardy nature, unique leaf shapes, and iridescent coloration. Similar to Anubias, they grow naturally on rocks and driftwood near fast-flowing rivers.

Key Plant Characteristics

Growth Habit: They are rheophytes, meaning they naturally adapt to rushing waters by anchoring tightly to hardscape via a creeping rhizome.

Iridescence: Many species show an exquisite metallic shimmer or blue, purple, and reddish hues under proper aquarium lighting.

Distinct Dots: Under water, the leaves develop tiny, silver-looking dots that are actually specialized stomata (breathing pores).

Flowering: They frequently bloom underwater, producing a distinct white or pinkish spade-shaped flower structure called a spatha.

How to Plant and Propagate

Do Not Bury the Rhizome: This is the most crucial rule. The thick green stem (rhizome) must stay exposed to open water. Burying it in substrate causes it to rot and die.

Attach to Hardscape: Secure the plant to lava rocks, driftwood, or stones using aquarium-safe super glue gel or fishing line.

Propagation: Simply cut or snap the creeping rhizome into smaller sections with a sharp pair of scissors. Ensure each new piece has a few healthy leaves and roots attached.
