Dracaena sanderiana 'White' (commonly known as White Stripe Lucky Bamboo or Ribbon Plant) is a highly popular, variegated indoor plant prized for its slender green leaves edged with striking, clean white borders. Despite its common name, it is a member of the asparagus family and not a true bamboo.
Optimal Growing Methods
You can successfully grow this versatile plant using two completely different environments:
Growing in Water:
Place stems in a glass vessel with at least 2–5 cm of water covering the roots.
Change the water completely once every week to prevent stagnant bacteria growth.
Use distilled, filtered, or rainwater, as they are highly sensitive to fluoride and chlorine.
Growing in Soil:
Plant in a well-draining potting mix, ideally using a container with drainage holes.
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged or soggy.
Allow the top centimeter of soil to dry out slightly before watering again.
Core Care Requirements
Light: Provide bright, indirect sunlight. Variegated white varieties need a bit more light than solid green ones to keep their vibrant stripes. Avoid harsh, direct sun, which quickly scorches the leaves.
Temperature: Maintain warm room temperatures between 18°C and 32°C. Protect the plant from cold window drafts and direct air conditioning vents.
Fertilizer: Feed very sparingly. Use a highly diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer once every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer. For water-grown plants, a single drop of liquid fertilizer is usually plenty.
Common Problems to Watch For
Yellowing Leaves: Often caused by too much direct sun, over-fertilizing, or tap water heavy in chemicals. Switch to filtered water and move it into filtered shade.
Brown Tips: Usually indicates low humidity or a buildup of salts and fluoride from tap water.
Soft, Mushy Stems: This is a sign of root rot, typically caused by stagnant water or waterlogged soil. Cut away the mushy parts immediately to save the healthy stalk.
