Overview of the Species

Origin: Slow-moving streams, rivers, and rice paddies in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

Size: Usually reaches 2.5 to 3.5 inches (7.5 to 9 cm).

Lifespan: Typically 2 to 4 years, but can live up to 6 years with excellent care.

Special Trait: They are labyrinth fish. They must have clear access to the water's surface to gulp air.

Anatomy: They possess two long, whisker-like pelvic fins used to feel and navigate their surroundings.

Diet and Nutrition

Dwarf gouramis are natural omnivores. They are not picky eaters and happily consume most foods that fit into their small mouths:

Daily Base: High-quality tropical fish flakes or micro-pellets.

Meat Treats: Frozen or live brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.

Vitamins: Supplementing with color-enhancing foods will make their reds and blues pop.

Tank Mates and Temperament

While generally peaceful and shy, male dwarf gouramis can be highly territorial toward their own kind or fish with similar body shapes.

Excellent Companions: Small, peaceful schoolers like tetras, rasboras, corydoras catfish, and peaceful snails.

Bad Companions: Male Bettas, rival male gouramis, or fin-nippers like tiger barbs. Small dwarf shrimp might also look like a snack.
