Fahaka Puffer (Tetraodon lineatus)

The Fahaka Puffer (Tetraodon lineatus), also known as the Nile Puffer, is a massive, highly intelligent freshwater fish known for its incredible "water puppy" personality. However, due to their large size, extreme aggression, and complex dietary requirements, they are strictly recommended for experienced aquarists.

Tank Size & Requirements

Fahaka Puffers grow rapidly and produce an immense amount of waste. Providing an adequately large tank from the beginning is vital to prevent severe health issues like organ stunting.

Minimum Tank Size: 125 to 150 US Gallons (470 to 570 liters) for a single adult. A 200+ gallon tank is highly recommended to give them adequate turning room.

Tank Footprint: A minimum length of 5 feet is required so the adult fish can swim and explore comfortably.

Filtration: Heavy-duty canister filters or sump systems are mandatory. Your filtration system should turn over the entire volume of the tank 6 to 10 times per hour to handle their heavy bioload.

Ideal Water Parameters

Fahaka Puffers are scaleless fish, making them highly sensitive to poor water chemistry and sudden parameter shifts.

Water Type: Strictly freshwater. (A common fatal mistake is keeping them in brackish water).

Temperature: Keep water consistently warm between 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).

pH Level: Aim for a stable, slightly alkaline pH of 7.0 to 8.0.

Toxicity: Ammonia and Nitrite must remain strictly at 0 ppm, with Nitrates ideally kept below 15–20 ppm through large weekly water changes.

Diet & Tooth Maintenance

Fahaka Puffers are specialized carnivores (molluscivores). Their teeth are fused into a powerful beak that grows continuously throughout their lifespan. If they are not fed hard-shelled foods, their teeth will overgrow, locking their mouths shut and leading to starvation.

Tooth Trimming Staples:

Snails (Ramshorn or Apple snails), whole crabs, crayfish, clams, and mussels in their shells.

Meaty Supplements: Raw shelled prawns, shrimp, earthworms, and krill.

Feeding Frequency: Juveniles should be fed daily, while adults should be transitioned to feeding every other day to prevent dangerous obesity.

Tank Setup & Aquascaping

Substrate: Use a thick layer of soft, fine sand. Fahaka puffers love to bury themselves in the substrate to relax or ambush prey; rough gravel will scratch and infect their soft underbellies.

Decor: Arrange smooth, heavy driftwood and large stones to create caves and visual barriers. Ensure everything is securely placed, as large puffers love to physically rearrange their tanks.

Plants: Hardier varieties like Anubias and Java Fern work best. Delicate plants will likely get torn up or accidentally uprooted by the fish.

Equipment Protection: Keep your aquarium heaters protected with a plastic guard or hidden away inside a sump. Fahakas are notorious for biting and shattering exposed glass heater elements or chewing on electrical cords.

Tank Mates & Temperament

Fahaka Puffers are highly aggressive, apex predators. They are extremely territorial and do not tolerate the presence of other fish.

The Golden Rule: They must be kept completely alone in a species-only environment.

The Risk: While some keepers successfully raise them with fast dither fish (like Giant Danios) or armored bottom-dwellers (like large Plecos) while young, this compatibility almost always ends abruptly. As the puffer matures, its predatory drive kicks in, and it can bite other fish clean in half with its powerful beak.
