Freshwater angelfish are iconic, elegant South American cichlids known for their tall, wing-like fins and graceful swimming behavior. They belong to the genus Pterophyllum and originate from the warm, densely vegetated waters of the Amazon and Orinoco Basins. While they are generally peaceful community fish, they are cichlids, meaning they can become territorial, especially when pairing up to breed.

Diet and Feeding

Angelfish are natural ambush predators that feed at the surface or mid-water. To keep their colors vibrant and immune systems strong, rotate their diet:

Daily Base: High-quality tropical flake foods or floating micro-pellets.

Protein Treats: Frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp.

Vitamins: Occasional live foods or nutrient-rich gel mixes to prevent deficiencies.

Selecting Compatible Tank Mates

Because they are cichlids, choosing the right neighbors is a balancing act.

Great Choices: Corydoras catfish, bristlenose plecos, peaceful medium-sized tetras (like Bleeding Heart or Lemon tetras), and gouramis.

Avoid Fin Nippers: Fast, aggressive nippers like Tiger Barbs will shred an angelfish’s delicate fins.

Avoid Bite-Sized Prey: Adult angelfish will aggressively hunt and eat tiny fish like Neon Tetras or dwarf shrimp.
