Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) is one of the most popular, hardy, and beginner-friendly freshwater aquarium plants in the world. Native to Southeast Asia, this slow-growing epiphyte is highly adaptable and thrives in an incredibly wide range of water conditions.

⚠️ The Golden Rule: Do Not Bury the RhizomeThe most critical care rule for Java Fern is that the rhizome (the thick green horizontal stem) must never be buried in gravel or soil substrate. If buried, the rhizome will suffocate and rot, killing the plant. Instead, it must be attached to aquarium hardscape.

How to plant: Anchor the plant to driftwood or rocks.

Securing methods: Use a small dab of gel-based superglue directly on the rhizome or tie it down using fishing line or sewing thread. Over time, the roots will naturally grip the surface.

Black Spots Notice: Small black or dark brown dots on the undersides of the leaves are sporangia (reproductive organs), not a disease.

Propagation: The plant reproduces effortlessly on its own. You will see tiny new plantlets grow directly on the tips or edges of older leaves. Once they develop tiny roots, gently pluck them off and attach them elsewhere.
