Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus) 2cm

The Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus) is a tiny, peaceful nano catfish from South America that grows to a maximum size of just 1 inch (2.5 cm). Unlike most other corydoras species that strictly inhabit the bottom of the aquarium, pygmy corys are unique because they love to hover midwater like underwater hummingbirds.

Tank Requirements

Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons (38 liters) is highly recommended to maintain stable water parameters.

Substrate: They need a soft sand substrate or very fine, smooth gravel to protect their delicate mouth barbels (whiskers).

Environment: Provide plenty of cover, such as live plants (like Java Moss or Java Fern), driftwood, and leaf litter to help them feel safe.

Surface Access: Always leave a small gap of air at the top of the tank. They regularly dart to the surface to take quick gulps of air.

Water Parameters

Temperature: 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F)

pH Range: 6.0 to 7.5 (They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water)

Water Hardness: 2 to 15 dGH (Soft to medium water)

Water Quality: They are highly sensitive to nitrates, so frequent partial water changes are essential.
