Rotala macrandra Giant (also known as Giant Red Rotala) is a striking, large-leafed aquatic stem plant known for its vibrant pink to deep red colors. Native to India, it is a popular background or focal point plant in high-tech aquascapes, Dutch-style tanks, and nature-style layouts. Because it requires strict water parameters, high lighting, and heavy nutrient dosing, it is considered a moderate to advanced plant to care for.

Key Growth & Maintenance Requirements

Lighting & Color: High-intensity lighting is crucial. Without enough light, the plant will turn green, lose its lower leaves, or rot.

CO2 Injection: Pressurized CO2 injection is necessary to maintain compact growth and dense, healthy leaf structures.

Fertilization: This plant requires a robust dosing schedule. It is a heavy feeder that benefits from iron-rich substrates, liquid micro-nutrients, and balanced phosphates.

Pruning and Propagation: Cut the longest stems 5–10 cm from the substrate. You can replant the upper cuttings directly into the substrate using aquascaping tweezers to expand your bush. Space individual stems slightly apart to ensure light reaches the lower leaves.
