Albino Tiger Oscar Cichlid (Astronotus ocellatus) 3"

The Albino Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is a striking, captive-bred color variant of the common Oscar cichlid, highly prized for its creamy white to pinkish body heavily marbled with vibrant red or orange patterns. Often referred to as "dog-like" pets, these fish are famous for their immense intelligence, playful curiosity, and ability to recognize and interact with their owners. However, they are rapid growers that reach a massive adult size of 12 to 14 inches (30–35 cm) and require dedicated, specialized care. 

Tank Setup & Water Care

Because they are heavy waste producers and grow very fast, cutting corners on space or filtration will quickly lead to poor health. 

Filtration: Powerful filtration (such as dual canisters or a sump system) is non-negotiable. Oscars are exceptionally messy eaters.

Water Changes: Expect to perform 25% to 30% weekly water changes to control nitrate levels. 

Water Parameters: Maintain a temperature between 74–81°F (23–27°C) and a steady pH of 6.0 to 7.5.

Lighting: Albino variants lack natural skin pigment and are notably sensitive to intense light. Keep aquarium lighting relatively dim or offer plenty of shaded cover to prevent stress and color fading.

Aquascaping: Use heavy rocks and large pieces of driftwood. Oscars love to "redecorate" by digging up substrate and throwing decorations around. Avoid sharp objects or fragile glass heaters inside the tank. 

Diet & Nutrition

Albino Oscars are primarily carnivores with voracious appetites. Provide a high-protein, diverse diet to maintain their bright red-orange colors: 

Staple: High-quality, floating large cichlid pellets.

Proteins: Frozen or fresh treats like krill, bloodworms, crickets, mealworms, chopped prawns, and earthworms.

Note on Feeder Fish: Avoid feeding them live feeder goldfish, as they carry a high risk of introducing parasites and diseases like "Hole-in-the-Head". 

Behavior & Tank Mates

Oscars are semi-aggressive and highly territorial. They will aggressively swallow any fish that can fit into their large mouths. 

Best Route: Keeping a single Albino Oscar as a solitary "wet pet" centerpiece is highly successful.

Compatible Companions: If you have a massive tank, you can choose large, robust tank mates like Silver Dollars, tinfoil barbs, large plecostomus (algae eaters), or other similarly sized, non-assertive South American cichlids
