Balloon Boesemani Rainbowfish

The Balloon Boesemani Rainbowfish is a selectively bred, short-body variant of the classic Boesemani Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia boesemani). It features a unique, rounded, balloon-like shape but retains the famous, vibrant two-tone coloration—a deep bluish-purple on the front half and a bright orange-yellow on the back half.

Appearance and Characteristics

Body Shape: Short, deeply compressed, and round or "balloon" shaped.

Coloration: Males display intense blue/purple and orange/yellow halves. Females are typically more muted with greenish-silver tones.

Size: Usually reaches around 2 to 3 inches (5–7.5 cm), which is shorter than the standard 4-inch variety.

Lifespan: 3 to 5 years with proper aquarium care.

Tank Setup and Water Requirements

Tank Size: Minimum 30 gallons (114 liters). They are active swimmers and need open space.

Water Temperature: 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).

pH Range: 7.0 to 8.0 (they prefer slightly alkaline, hard water).

Decor: Use dark substrate and plenty of live plants around the edges to make their colors pop.

Diet and Feeding

They are highly active omnivores. To maintain their bright colors, feed them a varied diet:

High-quality color flakes or micro pellets.

Frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.

Temperament and Tank Mates

Behavior: Peaceful, energetic, and shoaling fish. They must be kept in groups of 6 or more to feel secure and display their best colors.

Compatibility: Great for community tanks. Pair them with other peaceful, fast-moving fish like tetras, danios, corydoras catfish, or other rainbowfish.

Avoid slow, long-finned tank mates, as the rainbowfish's fast swimming can stress them out.
