The Begonia kingiana "Mini" (often called the Tortoise Shell Begonia) is a compact, rare rhizomatous species endemic to the limestone cliffs of Peninsular Malaysia, highly prized for terrariums due to its striking, patterned foliage.

Visual Characteristics

The Leaves: It features rounded, velvety leaves with an intricate, high-contrast pattern resembling a tortoise shell. The coloration blends deep chocolate brown or purplish-black with vibrant chartreuse or neon green accents.

The Size: The "Mini" variant stays exceptionally compact, typically arriving in a small 5–8cm starter size. It maintains a dense, bushy growth habit that does not easily outgrow confined spaces.

Light: Bright, indirect light is best (such as an east-facing window). Never expose it to direct sunlight, which easily scorches its delicate foliage.

Humidity: High humidity (60% to 70%+) is strictly required. It thrives exceptionally well in an enclosed glass terrarium, cloche, or a dedicated greenhouse cabinet.

Watering: Keep the substrate evenly moist but never soggy. Crucial rule: Avoid splashing water directly onto the leaves, as trapped moisture will quickly cause fungal spots and leaf rot.

Substrate: Use a highly airy, loose, well-draining premium mix. A blend of coco coir, perlite, orchid bark, and sphagnum moss works best to retain light moisture without suffocating the roots.

Temperature: Prefers consistent warmth between 16°C and 29°C. Protect it entirely from cold winter drafts and sudden temperature drops.
