The Elephant Ear Halfmoon Betta (also commonly known as the Dumbo Halfmoon) is a highly sought-after variety of Betta splendens famous for its massive, fan-like pectoral fins that resemble elephant ears, paired with a stunning caudal fin that spreads into a perfect 180-degree half-circle. Due to their heavy, elaborate finnage, these fish are slower swimmers and require specialized care to stay healthy and thrive.

Key Characteristics

The "Elephant Ears": The pectoral fins are dramatically enlarged and often feature a contrasting color (typically solid white, pastel, or translucent) to the rest of the body.

Halfmoon Tail: When flared, the tail forms a crisp capital "D" shape with a true 180-degree spread.

Varieties: They come in an array of patterns, including Lavender, Salamander, Mustard Gas, and Platinum White.

Specific Care Requirements

Because their oversized fins create significant drag, Elephant Ear Halfmoons require minor adjustments compared to standard bettas:

Tank Size: A minimum of 5 gallons is highly recommended to allow adequate territory while keeping the environment manageable for a slow swimmer.

Low Water Flow: You must use a gentle sponge filter or an adjustable filter on its lowest setting. Strong currents will quickly exhaust them and cause severe stress or fin nipping.

Safe Decor: Only use live or soft silk plants. Rigid plastic decorations will easily tear their fragile, sail-like fins.

Resting Spots: Provide broad-leafed plants (like Anubias) or a floating betta log near the surface. They need frequent resting spots to catch their breath.
