Species Overview

Scientific Name: Channa aurantimaculata (also called the Orange-spotted snakehead).

Origin: Endemic to the subtropical Brahmaputra River basin in Assam, northeastern India.

Adult Size: Typically grows between 35 to 40 cm (14 to 16 inches).

Lifespan: Can live for over 10 to 15 years with proper care.

Special Anatomy: They possess a labyrinth-like accessory respiratory organ. This means they must surface to breathe atmospheric air or they will drown.

Aquarium Setup & Environment

The Golden Cobra Snakehead requires a specialized aquarium setup tailored to its large size and native climate.

Tank Size: Minimum 4 x 2 x 2 feet (approx. 120 gallons) for a single adult.

Escape-Proof Lid: Strictly mandatory. They are powerful jumpers and will easily leap out of the tank when hunting or exploring.

Aquascaping: Use heavy vegetation, floating plants, driftwood, and smooth rocks to create hiding spots. Leave open swimming spaces at the top so they can easily breathe air.

Filtration: Moderate to low flow. They naturally inhabit slow-moving wetlands and swamps.

Diet and Nutrition

They are obligate, ambush carnivores.
