Super Red Dragon (SRD) Flowerhorn 3" Juvenile Fish

An SRD (Super Red Dragon) Flowerhorn at 3 inches is in its vital juvenile "grooming" phase, where its potential for intense red coloration and a massive nuchal hump (kok) is just beginning to show. At this size, the fish is highly adaptable, responsive, and ready for specialized care to maximize its genetic potential.

Strategic Diet Rotation

Morning Feeding: Give high-protein growth and head-building pellets when their metabolism is highest to support frame and kok structure.

Evening Feeding: Switch to premium color-enhancing pellets rich in astaxanthin, spirulina, or high-quality freeze-dried krill to deepen the red pigment.

Portion Control: Feed 4 to 5 tiny meals daily that are completely eaten within 2 minutes. Fast the fish for one full day every week to prevent bloating and internal infections.

Strict Exclusions: Never feed fresh mammalian or avian meat (like chicken or beef heart). They cannot digest these fats, which leads to fatal intestinal blockages.

Specialized Environment

Tank Setup: Keep the fish completely solo. Flowerhorns are highly aggressive and will fight or become chronically stressed by tank mates. Use a minimum tank size of 40 gallons for a juvenile, keeping in mind they eventually grow to 10–12 inches.

Water Conditions: Maintain a stable temperature between 28°C to 30°C. Use strong filtration and perform 20–30% weekly water changes; pristine water quality is a primary trigger for kok development.

Interaction & Mental Stimulation

Mirror Exercise: Place a small mirror against the glass for 5 minutes, once or twice a day. This causes the fish to flare and "fight" its reflection. The hormone rush from this territorial display directly stimulates nuchal hump growth and heightens aggression and color.
