Swordtail Fish (Xiphophorus hellerii)

The swordtail fish (Xiphophorus hellerii) is a highly popular, vibrant, and hardy freshwater fish native to Mexico and Central America. Named for the distinctive, sword-like extension on the bottom of the male's tail, it is a favorite for both beginner and advanced aquarium hobbyists.

Appearance and Varieties

While the wild green swordtail is primarily olive green with a red lateral stripe, decades of selective breeding have created many stunning color morphs.

Red Swordtail: The classic, solid bright red variety.

Koi Swordtail: Features mottled patterns resembling Kohaku koi fish.

Pineapple Swordtail: Features a bright yellow or orange body with red highlights.

Fin Variations: Includes the "Hi-Fin" (elongated dorsal fin) and "Lyretail" (extended top and bottom tail fins).

Tank Setup and Water Parameters

Swordtails are active swimmers that grow up to 5–6 inches (13–15 cm), meaning they require adequate physical space to thrive.

Minimum Tank Size: 29 gallons (approx. 110 liters) is highly recommended due to their activity level and size.

Water Temperature: 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C).

pH Range: 7.0 to 8.0 (they strongly prefer slightly hard, alkaline water).

Tank Lid: A tight-fitting lid is mandatory because swordtails are notorious jumpers.

Behavior and Compatibility

Swordtails are generally peaceful community fish, but males can become territorial and aggressive toward one another.

The Harem Rule: To prevent males from exhausting or harassing females, keep a ratio of one male to every 3 or 4 females.

Good Tank Mates: Platies, mollies, tetras, corydoras catfish, and gouramis.

Poor Tank Mates: Large predators, aggressive cichlids, or fin-nipping fish like Tiger Barbs.

Diet and Feeding

These fish are omnivores and are exceptionally easy to feed.

Core Diet: High-quality tropical flake food or pellets.Vegetable Matter: They require plant-based foods and will naturally graze on aquarium algae.
